April Team Trips – Norwich Easter Meet and Doha Long Course

Over 100 Hamilton Aquatics swimmers attended two team trips during the month of April, both trips allowing the young athletes to compete in unfamiliar environments. 48 from the Performance and Potential Squads travelled to Norwich in the east of England for the annual Easter Meet weekend whilst 65 from the Development, Club and Performance pathways flew to Doha for the Long Course meet.

As well as the opportunity to compete, these team excursions also offered the swimmers the chance to develop their teamwork and leadership skills, and encouraged them to take responsibility for themselves. It was commendable to hear the hotel staff mention how well behaved and well represented Hamilton Aquatics was on both trips.

Although the Norwich trip offered a sense of familiarity for the coaches, for many swimmers this was their first trip to the United Kingdom. Whilst there, the staff organised some activities to allow the children to get a sense of the area, including Easter egg hunts and a trip around the local city centre. Every year attended, Hamilton have won top club at this meet. This year, although a smaller and less experienced team attended, all swimmers stepped up their game to bring home the trophy once again.

The majority of swimmers in Doha were attending their first team trip and all performed admirably; the Dubai team averaging 5 swimmers per final!

Stu Sant, Head Development Coach -

“Norwich was a fantastic experience for our young swimmers. They have learnt valuable lessons with regards to how they need to prepare themselves to perform at a high standard whilst on team trips, and I am sure this will serve them well further down the line should they ever qualify for international teams, or travel to national competitions. However, the main thing that was pleasing to see about this trip, was that the swimmers had fun and enjoyed being a part of the team. Hamilton were the loudest supporters during finals and I was really pleased to see the swimmers helping each other out and supporting each other. Well done to all parents, swimmers and coaches.”

“This year’s trip to Doha was an extremely enjoyable one. We took a very young group of swimmers, many of whom have never been on a group trip before, and the way they conducted themselves was very pleasing to see. We had swimmers taking part in a large number of events, and continually stepping up and racing tough in finals, as well as a great atmosphere within the team. It was fantastic to see the older swimmers who had a bit more experience take on the role of guiding and encouraging some of the younger swimmers within the group, and I am sure that the younger swimmers within the group will have enjoyed the trip and learnt a lot. Well done to all involved.”
