Blood Donation Drive 2017

Hamilton Aquatics lifesaving initiative in association with the Dubai Blood Donation Center is holding a blood donation drive.

Venue: Mobile Donation Van, Emicool Parking lot opposite Detroit House, Motor City. Dubai

Date: 25th May 2017

Timing: 9:00 am to 01:00 pm

Note: Please bring your Emirates ID or some form of identification with you.

 

Who can donate blood:

Most people can give blood. You can give blood if you:

  • are fit and healthy
  • weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs or 50kg

Benefits of donating blood:

 

  • Helps prevents heart and liver ailments caused by iron overload
  • Aids in weight loss of donors
  • Helps to prevent cancer
  • Lowers risk of hemochromatosis
  • Boost production of new blood cells and promotes good health

 

Who cannot give blood:

- Donors below the age of 18 and above 60 and with weight lower than 110 lbs cannot donate blood

- A donor with active infection, acute infection or diseases like HIV, AIDS should not donate blood.

- If you are pregnant

- If you are on antibiotics or have the flu

- If you are taking or have taken any of the below mentioned medication at any point in your life:

  • Avodart, Jalyn (dutasteride) - usually given for prostate enlargement
  • Proscar (finasteride) - usually given for prostate gland enlargement
  • Propecia (finasteride) - usually given for baldness
  • Accutane (Absorica, Amnesteem, Claravis, Myorisan, Sotret, Zenatane (isotretinoin) - usually given for severe acne
  • Soriatane (acitretin) – usually given for severe psoriasis
  • Tegiso, (etretinate) – usually given for severe psoriasis
  • Growth Hormone from Human Pituitary Glands - used usually for children with delayed or impaired growth
  • Insulin from Cows (Bovine, or Beef, Insulin) - used to treat diabetes
  • Hepatitis B Immune Globulin – given following an exposure to hepatitis B.
    • NOTE: This is different from the hepatitis B vaccine which is a series of 3 injections given over a 6 month period to prevent future infection from exposures to hepatitis B.
  • Plavix (clopidogrel) and Ticlid (ticlopidine) – inhibits platelet function; used to reduce the chance for heart attack and stroke.
  • Feldene – given for mild to moderate arthritis pain
  • Experimental Medication or Unlicensed (Experimental) Vaccine – usually associated with a research protocol
